PSO review by COCO     On: 2006-07-16

I actually do not own this game but I play it all the time at my friends house. Beggining gamers will find this game tricky but once u get the hang of it it is fun. experienced gamers will find this game addictive. The only fault is the graphics, they need a little work but the sound and overall gameplay is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!
Halo Has Some Competition     On: 2005-12-18

I think that people who have known of this and played this all agree it is one of the best games ever released.
so many choices to choose so much possibilities. You pick your class arranging from humans to androids. You customize your clothing gear and so on, and then yourre off.You start on a space ship and work your way onto a planet Ragol and discover the truth of the people on Pioneer 1 are no more. The story has little focus on the actual gameplay. You can have optional quest to do easy objectives like find someone or so on to gain money(Mesta). The fun of the game is the multiplayer or online.eaither way you have 4 people you can play with at a time. You and your friends can team up hit off to Ragol and start killing of the inhabitants wich are threatning you.Online you are offered weapons and gear that are not obtainable offline. It is very addicting collecting and upgrading weapons to their own potential.Or to find a rare weapon thta everyone wants including yourself. When you level up you can brag to all your friends then wait till they die and take their cash. You can heal your friends i nbattles or be jerks to them if youre stronger and let them die off and you take all the goods you want.So many people cant put this game down.Wit hall the arrangments of guns, swords, sabes, daggers, rifles, wands, magical spells, and shields you can obtai nit makes it endless. Each location on the planet hasa theme liek a forest, cave, mine, ruin and so on.The bosses are rugged and tough and rewuire team work. You can raise little robots (mags) and they become ike your own helper but you must train them and feed them in order to do so.Whats really nice is the fact that you get episode 2 along with episode 1.Thats a one-up fro mthe Dreamcast version. Now when youre done episode one you can take your gaming exsperience further and go through countless hours of more extravagent roaming of\\ver lush envirements like seabeds. The enemies for the most part are appropriate if its the forest the enemies go along with the envirement.I will say the AI is a little lacking but its all to fun to find doubts on why not to play it.The controls are easy to get the hang of and soon youll be a pro at timing shots and getting good accuracy.Buy this and go home happy.

Excellent!     On: 2004-09-02

I played this to DEATH on my Dreamcast. Now it has both games from the dreamcast days and Episode 2! Its a phenomenal game that is ALMOST perfect! the ONLY two things I must say stink are the "NON" targeting mode and not being able to rotate the camera. Even amidst these two issues the game still shines BRILLIANTLY! With camera rotation and option for lock on this game could have been the best game EVER made! It shines online the most but is JUST as much fun with two or more players offline. Customization is done very well etc also.
BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!     On: 2004-08-25

Ive played this game before and anyone that dosnt have it needs 2 get it!!! Its the best game ever id have 2 say its the funnest game ive ever played in my life!!!!!!!!
99%goodness,1% Badness     On: 2004-07-09

My friend showed me how fun this game was. And the only thing bad about is on the boss Dragon the camera is tilted and you cant see very well.
I havent played online or episode 2.
But if I get the game, my username is going to be Vash the Stampede.

GET THE GAME! (But dont say its bad.)

It's only fun if you don't get corruption or FSOD     On: 2004-07-02

Hello all of you reading this who dont have PSO, READ THIS!!!:

Ok, first if you only play this game offline, youre fine. However, if you ever decide to play online with this game, Sega has a HORRIBLE server. There are two thing that can happen when you play online. The first is known as FSOD, frozen screen of death, the screen freezes, and all your unequipped items vanish, because the only way to unfreeze is to turn off the GC. Next is corruption. Since the games has a "double save", the memory card can sometimes reject the second save, causing your card to get corrupted, and all your saved info, ERASED. This even happens with a Nintendo made memory card. So, if youre thinking of playing this game online, create a backup character, learn how to dupe, and dupe all your items to that character on a DIFFERENT memory card. I was the head of a club, and part of many other clubs, and now its all gone due to corruption. Players BEWARE!!!

amazing!     On: 2004-06-27

i found this in my friends house, going through his old gamecube games. this game is awasome! the battle-system is user-friendly, the create a character function gets you more in-touch with the game, and this is offline im talking about! the online function (havent used it, but read about it online) seems okay, but it costs too much. also, if you work as a team of sixteen people online, you can get seperated much more easily than earlier (though its easier to find your group.) over all, i give it a 5, beacause it is such a good game
This game is awesome!     On: 2004-06-26

You can choose from three different classes: Hunter, Ranger, and Force. Also, there are a dozen(?) section IDs that will affect what items you may find. There are many different modes to play in. I cant remember off the top of my head at the moment. Anyway, depending on the race you choose, you will get different attributes.

- Male: Higher ATP (Attack Power)
- Female: Higher Evasion (Blocking)

- Human
Regen: none
Stats: allround
Limits: cant use Traps

- Newman (my favorite)

Regen: TP (Technique Power)
Stats: higher MST (Mental Strength) and Evasion potential
Limits: cant use Traps

- Hucast
Regen: HP (Hit/Health Points)
Stats: higher ATP and ATC (Attack Accuracy) potential
Limits: cant use Techniques

Thats a basic idea of what the races are. There is also a large variety of items, including weapons. My personal favorite weapon is the dagger class. The best part about this game: You can play Offline! So you dont need an adaptor. And Techniques are basically spells. Dont forget to feed your MAG! With each transformation it goes through, it will learn a skill called a Photon Blast. There are Blasts that heal you and Blasts that damage monsters, etc. You can feed your MAG basic healing items, such as an Antidote or Monomate.

I really recommend you get the guide. Id have never been able to beat it without the official guide! I hope I helped.

General Overview     On: 2004-06-23

This game is. . . well to be honest, expansive. There are about, oh, 12 basic weapons give or take. Then you have four more powerful versions of that weapon. Then you get into the legendary weapons, which there are quite a few of. There are a dozen characters each of which can be customized. The human/newman characters have 18 different outfits. The android characters each have 25 metal/paint stylings. There are, Im going to say again, 12 different levels in Episode 1. I cannot tell you how many there are in the second, seeing as I have not yet completed it.
There is also an interesting unit which hovers above your shoulder, known as a MAG. When it first evolves it will change depending on your class. So there are only three evolutions at first, but then it becomes a whole lot more complex.
Phantasy ownage     On: 2004-02-29

I believe every gamer should have the chance 2 play it atleast
once. It ownz. A lot. The singleplayerstory is very deep and the
mplayer is probably 1 of the best ever for a videogame
(best= James Bond: Golden eye N64) So I think that if u dont have it,
GET IT!!!
Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 And 2:the best game ever!!!!     On: 2004-02-09

Some of you may remember the Phantasy Star games on Sega Genisis as a great series of RPG well heads up cause Phantasy Star is back but now its completly different but dont worry change is a good thing.

Gameplay: 10/10
One of the coolest things about this game is the character creation you can pick out of 3 races Humans Newmans and Androids and from 3 character styles you can literally have you and 20 people online as the same class and with all the apperence options no one will look identical.

Hunters:Who are swordsmen/ women by nature and can use every sort of sword sabers partisans daggers katanas sicles double sided swords (Darth Maul style) even use two swords at once but can also handle guns handguns mechguns but their strength and selection is limited and some technquies (magc spells aka techs) but the strength of these spells are limited to levels 15 or 20 when the ultimate level is 30.

Rangers:These are your marksmen/ women they can use every kind of gun handguns mechguns shotguns bazookas rifles imaginable and some swords sabers and a few double sided swords but their strength and selection is limited and techs but their strength of these spells are also limited to either level 15 or 20

Forces:Forces are wizards they excel in using techs and can really tear up when they get their techs stronger they can get them all the way to the max tech level of 30 they use canes and staffs wands spellbooks and other wizard equipment but they can also use a few guns handguns and certain rifles and swords sabers and double sided swords but are very weak in this area so your much better off going off wizard style.

So between all these occupations and races there are 12 classes all of which are unique and have advantages and disadvantages over each other such as having more defence or attacking power than another class also techs max level is affected by the class you choose

Androids are robots basicly they cant use techs at all but can see traps and set them to help them take on their enemies also because they are robotical they have a big strengh advantage

Humans are well humans (yes even in this futuristic world we humans still exsist) who are hunters or rangers they can only get the techs to level 15 but have highter defence and have better evasion rates

Newmans are genetically enhanced humans who are a combo of a Force and Humter anyway they are hunters and or forces can get the techs to level 20 unless they are a force then they have the potiental to get the techs to 30 and do big damage

Now after you have choosen your class you get to create their look from scratch hair style skin color height weight face paint job (if an android) everything!

Now on to the overall gameplay it is intense online you can interact with thousands of people all over the world and go into the world of Ragol and explore, chat, and fight! The fighting is great you find yourself fighting hundreds of different enemies and you along with some buds will have the time of your life fighting off the hoardes of evil the gameplay style is action rpg like Guantlet or Baldurs Gate only a lot more intense there are 4 different difficulties Normal Hard Very Hard and Ultimate you can find thousands of items and play through both Episode 1 (formally version 1 and 2 on Dreamcast) and 2 (a completly new adventure with amped difficulty) and play dozens of online quests some are your run of the mill monster elimination quests and fetch quests but some are really cool making a movie particapating with the enemy monsters in festival along with special holiday specific that Sonic Team the creators of Phantasy Star download on the servers depending on the time of year also there are some quests online that add a lot to the story and a upcoming one that tells plot info to the upcoming sequel Phantasy Star Online Episode 3 and level to the ultmate level of 200 also you can play 3 different modes Normal,Challange, and Battle

Challenge:You play through the games levels with a preselected level and equipment and try to survive

Battle:Should you get tired of the first 2 modes you can challenge your freinds to a battle and fight them to your hearts content.

If you dont feel like or are unable to get online there is always the offline mode which have a bunch of quests and a great story also the offline mode has multiplayer options so you and your freinds can enjoy the game in the same room.

Story 10/10
The story is great and involving and has several side quests
It begins when the people of a planet called Coral discover that there planet will soon be destroyed so they send probes into space to find a hostpitable planet they found one called Ragol they then built a giant spaceship called Pioneer 1 and got a few thousand people to get the planet ready and sent it off Pioneer 2 made it to Ragol with everyone that remained on Coral aboard but just as it opens communication with Pioneer 1 a huge explsion shakes the planet and contact with Pioneer 1 is lost thats where you come in you are to investigate the planet and find out what happened.

Graphics: 10/10
The graphics in this game are amazing the detail given to your character is great and every indvidual level is beatiful espcially in Episode 2 waterfalls lava pits all come together to make a great game environment.

Length: 10/10
This game is huge youll spend hundreds of hours chating leveling and fighting it is truly one of the most expansive games out there

Replay Value: 10/10
Simply put youll be putting in this in for years to come

Bottom Line: 10/10
With hundreds of monsters 12 character classes 4 difficulties 3 Ocupations 2 Episodes equals 1 perfect game
Phantsy Star Online Epsiode 1 And 2 is comparable to the best RPGs out there and second to none

Don't think of it as a come back     On: 2004-01-26

Right now my best friend Forrest is like god to me he bought the game for the dreamcast when i played it iwas hooked on PSO phonics then i got the game for my birth day. then weeks weeks weeks later i found out that PSO was comming To the game cube thats when things got real...

all right this game has great and betiful graphics great online and offline game play the charather desighn feauture is really stunning

those are just some of the things that i am going to review

the game play is simple enouth to understand you learn combos buy combos there are pleanty of diferent moves and magic for each weapon there are no combos or magic attacks that are the same so dont worry there are plenty of weapons around 137 and some but what is real bicthy about the real real real real real cool weapon is that they are hard as hell to get-unlock-find-receive-or win like the double bladed swords light saber like weapons but if your a gun type person there is gun to so dont think your missing out

Lets talk Final Fantsy summons in PSO there are little robot like summon that you can feed and take care of ... they have this hidden abiltty called (photon blast) the Mags(summon) turn into animals like PowerRanger cretures ( are so so so so so cool man im fool of it)

In the game you grow levals in STR-DEF-ABL- and so on this is quiete possible the best online game evere created( and this is not just my oppionin)

The bad part is this is only one og the few online games in the GameCube sorry but this the truth face it

But dont worry ive have not beaten the game but that will last me untill Phantasy Star online Episode III C.A.R.D Revoltion

like i seid dont think of it as a come back trust the PHANTOM

One of the Top 5 games for the GC     On: 2004-01-25

One of the best, longest games on the gamecube. You start into the game as a Hunter, Force, or Ranger at lv 1 with basic items. There is more specific clases like RAmar and HUcast (ranger human male and hunter android male respectively) which limit you what items you get and what your beginning stats are. For example HUcasts have regenerating HP and the most ATK but the least amount of accuracy compared to the other classes. You get experience for killing monsters and when you get enough exp. you level up. You can get up to level 200, that is the highest in any game that i know of. When you level up your stats increase until they are maxed out.

The point of the game after you beat the story on all 4 difficulties (normal, hard, very hard, and ultimate) is to collect all of the many rares and special items this game has (well over 250). This game has a GREAT replay value and also is the only game online for the gamecube (other than warppipe compatible games: www.warppipe.com for more information). I would recommend adding this to your library of games.

Good game, limited appeal.     On: 2004-01-22

Originaly, this was one of my favorite all time games, largely due to the excellent online experience this game offered at one time...
Since there has been a lack of enthusiasm on Nintendos part on promoting this game or the onling experience, there has sadly been a great loss of participants and this cripples the games appeal quite a bit. Although it can be played offline, it still suffers because it is not an RPG in the traditional sense...Instead of moving through an epic story line and leveling your character to ultimatley bring the story to an end, you will move through a very small, finite story, to ultimatly beat a boss, and then go through the same thing several times to level your character to 200 and hopefully collect some of the rare and unique weapons or items in the game. It is this repetition of the scenarios that the online version would make acceptable and enjoyable. Indeed, bringing down a great foe after a long fight along side 3 other live team-mates is a wonderfull thing, as the multitude of personalities shine through the toon-like characters of the game. The once abundant gathering of charactes in the lobbies was a lively and ever changing place and it highly promoted the finding of rare items to trade, or simply to show off during battle.
That being said, I regret to say that I cannot at this time reccomed this game. It is unique, and interesting, but offline play seems shallow and repetitive, even monotonous when you go it alone. You can play with others offline, but I find the smaller divided screen difficult to get your bearings and just less enjoyable.
I can say this game is ok solo the first time through. However, without the active online play, there is just not enough motivation to reapeat the process over and over again. Originally this was a five star game. Sadly I have to bring it down to 3 stars. Its still good, but very limited.
Get it While you can or Get PSO plus when it comes out!!!!!!     On: 2004-01-13

This Game rocks!!!!!!!!!!!! Buy it as soon as possible! Some people say that its boring and while the levels get slightly repetetive the greater the level or the more you play through a level the more you will find. It starts of at normal difficulty and you can unlock hard, very hard, and ULTIMATE! The incentive for playing to ultimate is that there are over 250 unique items that are all accesible to find in ultimate!!! The items are so different looking that you kind of want to get all the items in the game. There are three classes force, ranger (THE BEST), and hunter. I have played this game extensively and still sadly have not gotten online but I know from friends that it is utterly amazing with new quests and items and mini-games!! Its totally worth $9 a month! Buy it while you can! I would give it 100 of 100 stars but it doesnt go that high!!!! Hope this helps. PSO ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A must buy game!!     On: 2003-12-29

To RPG lovers out there I strongly suggest Phanatsy Star Online. You get to play off-line and on-line, both are extremely fun. You also get to create a charchter, chosing different genders, cloths, hair, and other things to make your charchter unique. There are hunters who are deadly with swords and are great for close combat situations, but also gun use handguns. In the Hunter category you can be a male hunter, a female hunter, male android, or female android. Androids are more powerful then a human but cannot use magical spells, but, in return for not using magical spells, androids have the ability to slowly regain health, and set up traps to ensnare their oppenents in.

Then we get to the Ranger category. Rangers the primary gun users of the game. They may use handguns, like the hunter, but they can use guns that the hunter cant use like a rifle or a sniper wich makes them excellent for artillery. They are able to use a sabre but cannot use a sword. With rangers you can be a male ranger, female ranger, male android ranger, and a female android ranger. Again androids are much stronger, unable to use magic, but have the ability to set traps for there oppenent.

After the rangers comes the Forest. Forests are the heavy magic category for the game. Overall they are weak in attack, low in health, and low in deffense. You maybe thinking why would you want use those? Well they make up for all this with the ability of magic. They have a load of TP (a thing used for making spells) and they learn harder spells earlier then any other category in this game. This is the special forces group of the game. Of your thinking what are spells for? Well spells are a must in this game, unless you are an android. There are fire, electricity spells, spells to heal you or revive you, slow down enemies, or speed up yourself, or even teleport you out of danger. Forests have a male human, female human, there are no androids instead there are elves femal and human as well. The elves have the most TP in this category.
Overall this is a great game off-line or on-line i highly recomend it. Mission are a great way to make money and multiplayer is a great way to battle together.

Don't even pick it up....what a waste of time and money.     On: 2003-12-15

Yes...I know, you RPG fans wont pay any attention to me, but leave this horrible game alone. Dont buy, or even rent this disgrace to RPG games. I was very dissapionted with this game. You dont even have to think when you play this game. THE PUZZLES ARE NOT THE LEAST BIT CHALLENGING. All you do is run around and shoot stuff.
Try staring at a wall for an hour. PSO is exactly as entertaining
as a wall. If there was a category for very boring games, this game would get the gold medal. Even if you see PSO for cheap, just walk
away from it, unless you cant get to sleep. Play this game for a few minutes and youll be sound asleep

PROS: Good multiplayer/online play
+Play this if you cant get to sleep

CONS: Levels are waaaaaaaay too long
-Puzzles are simple
-as exciting as a wall
-Barely any plot lines
-an overall horrible game

Classic RPG gaming with a futuristic twist     On: 2003-12-09

If your a fan of multiplayer RPG/combat games, then Phantasy Star Online is for you. It is one of the best RPGs out there. Featuring an outstanding multiplayer mode for up to 4 people, it sets the table for what RPG gaming should be like. The single player mode provides a great challenge for all RPG gamers, and you complete quests and explore new areas to unlock the mysteries of the planet, Ragol. Gameplay is challenging at first, and I would recommend reading the instruction manual if you dont want to be lost! After a short while of gaming, you will learn the basics and work your way up to being a master. With beautiful graphics, a wonderful soundtrack, and endless hours of great gameplay, Phantasy Star Online will make a great addition to any Gamecube collection.

-Recommend ages 13+ due to complexity and mild violence.

phantasy star online     On: 2003-12-05

i love this game so much i would go up to the guy who made this game and give them 1,000,000 to make another one if your getting tired of playing by your self or with your friends tthen you can play online i love this game
Good game, but only if you play online     On: 2003-12-04

Phantasy Star Online can be best enjoyed when playing online with friends. To be realistic, dungeon-crawling by yourself isnt very fun, and it gets boring after a while. If you can get a broadband adapter and pay the monthly fee, I suggest you do so, because offline multiplayer, while fun, just isnt as rewarding as playing online.
Great Game     On: 2003-11-19

this is one of the best games available you will spend hours leveling up your characters and raising your mag (a little robot like thing that hovers above your shoulder). theres nothing better than battling gillchics for hours and then finally getting to the boss. then when you get online and start playing with three other people its great but there are some problems like sometimes when your playing online you get frozen screen of death better known as fsod and then you lose all item that arent equiped but all that aside this is my favorite game and next year there comeing out with phantasy star online 3 card revoloution. oh and one more thing you dont have to play the game online only there is a offline mode.
BUY IT!     On: 2003-11-18

If you like RPGS, GET THIS GAME.even if you cant play it online,[like me] the offline mode is AWESOME! i am level 68!!!When you get stronger in the game, you find more and more rare weapons, which by the way, are super cool. And to add it all up, pretty good graphics,BEST GAME I EVER PLAYED{literally}
To put it simply...This Game Rocks!!!     On: 2003-11-17

When Phantasy Star Online hit on the Dreamcast it became an instant hit and one of the greatest selling games the Dreamcast had next to Soul Calibur. It was a huge MMORPG where thousands of players went online to work together in 4 great levels of action gameplay. Also, with the arrival of the expansion version 2, people could now battle each other in PK fights and even play a little soccer while waiting in the lobby for a new game to begin. The game was great and now that greatness returns with the new Gamecube version. This one brings together the classic Episode I, along with the new Episode II. This package promises everything the original had, but with new weapons, items, worlds, and more.

Graphically, it is basically the same thing you would expect from the original version. Character models are done well except no real interaction with your character really....The action of the character follow through well though, and there are many types of designs for all 12 character models. As you can change Hair, Body, Proportions, and of course your name. The environments are rich and beautiful for the outside levels like forest and caves, but mines and ruins are repetitive but it doesnt distract from the gameplay at all. The GC version also have excellent effects such as heat waves, fog, and nice water waves and shadowing. The enemies and bosses are great as well and the introduction is mysterious and interesting. All in all great but nothing groundbreaking.

The sound is a recollection of all the music from the dreamcast version with some slow paced and fast paced techno music and symphony music. Even some music from the original Phantasy Star series has been included in Episode II. The music and sound effects for each level are quite fitting, except for some enemies that are very annoying when they are attacked such as the little penguin like Rag Rappy or the massive Pan-Arms. However, the sound department does its job in pulling you into this game.

Now we get to the department that makes this game totally worthwhile...The story is basically something goes wrong with a ship of people called Pioneer 1 as they venture to the world of Ragol. Also, the animal and technology on Ragol has all turned evil and new powerful creatures have emerged. It is your job as a hunter, force, or ranger to investigate find survivors, unlock evidence, and defeat the beings responsible for the mess. As a ever moving online experience it does just fine. There are 2 modes in the game Episode I and Episode II. Episode I contains basically the same thing as the Dreamcast version. All the old levels are back with their respective bosses and enemies. However, there are new items, weapons, and other things to look forward to as well. The graphics and music have been improved as well in Episode I and provides a better experience. Also, each of the new levels look great and the new enemies and bosses are even cooler with new powers and challenges.

Also, included in the offline mode is now a split screen multiplayer where 2-4 people can engage in a adventure into levels helping each other out or can battle to the death in a PK duel. Problems however plague the offline split screen mode. The graphics have been trimmed down to allow the split screen to work effectively but its nothing too bad, but the split screen for 3-4 players are very small and sometimes its hard to see. Though in the end if you can get by the problems it is a great way to level. Online mode is all you would expect it to be, you can get online by buying the Modem or BBA adapters for 35 bucks at any available retailer. Online lets you go online with people from all over the world. Work together as a team, PK battle, play some soccer, or just relax and exchange guild cards in the lobby. The trading system has been improved incredibly as well. No more dropping on the ground where items could be stolen or people could be deceived. Trade windows are now available for trustful trading actions. Also, as before new quests can be downloaded every holiday season for even more fun along with the other 100+ quests the game has to offer. With new items, character designs, mags, weapons, and levels you cant go wrong. Though the monthly fee is 9 dollars a month its still worth it all the way.

The Replay Value is where this game purely shines. The online gameplay makes this game a dream. Working together, joining guilds, making friends is what its all about in a MMORPG. Also, leveling is a lot of fun as it is a sense of accomplishment and as you level you can use your hard earned items and weapons as you meet their requirements. Tons of quests, weapons, and incredible boss fights make it even better. Also, playing with different characters can be real fun as well. All in all whether online or offline the game is a blast and you can pull easily up to 150 hours in this game. So, get connected and have a great time with one of the best console online RPGs available.

-Good single and multiplayer gaming (good for friend who get together alot)

Great RPG; but GO ONLINE!     On: 2003-08-11

To start off PSO I&II is a good game. Anyone who says this game is stupid is stupid themselves, Id like to see them create a video game. In the beginning, you choose from one of four empty slots and create a character. The 3 temporary char. slots are for transferring characters from another memory card. There are 3 classes of characters and 4 specific types in each. The three classes are Hunters (good with swords), Rangers (good with guns) and Forces (good with techniques, which is basically magic). The 4 types consist of Androids, Humans, and Newmans (Newmans are like Humans but with pointy ears.) Androids cannot use techniques like Humans and Newmans, but they can see and use traps. Beginners should use Droids since they regain hp and cannot get poisoned or anything, plus they have no technique points to worry about. TP (Technique points) are like hp but go down when you use spells. You can customize characters and during the game, collect new weapons. Thats about where the fun ends offline. No puzzles are involved in the levels, just figure your way around and kill enemies. There arent even very many types of enemies. In 1p mode there are quests but in 2-4player mode you just play through levels, and in this multiplayer mode you cant save. There are lots of items, almost too many. Its complicated since 2 items with the same name can raise different stats. Be sure to read through the whole instruction book before playing. I have never been online because of the fee but if you can, DO IT ONLINE. There are even downloadable quests. And now that i think of it there are practically no people to talk to offline(only in the pioneer 2 ship where you warp to levels) and there is basically no story and if there is you never really learn it. If you want to go online with gamecube this is your only way right now (and will probably be one of very few online cube games.) Now, you decide if you want this game or not.
this game pwns j00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!     On: 2003-07-28

I love this game!Online=paradise its sooooooooooooooo addicting!!!!!!! it lacks story line a tinsy bit.but the awsome game play is perfecto!Get it on ur gamecube.
bad, no no no no no!!!!     On: 2003-07-28

Do not get this game!!! Very very boring. Battling is painfully unrealistic and stupid. Takes forever to gain levels.
Every aspect of this game is disappointing.
Could nintendo release a better game?     On: 2003-07-27

the answer is no, not likely. This game is an rpg. When u first start the game you select your kind of character. there are three "species" in this game; Humans, Newmans (kinda elves), and Androids. Then there are three kinds of characters; Hunters(melee fighters), Rangers (shooters) and Forces (magic users). Ok there is not a species and gender for every type but here are the ones that do exist and their official names; *Hunters* HUmar = Human Male Hunter HUnewearl = Newman Female Hunter HUcast = Android Male Hunter HUcaseal = Android Female Hunter (sadly there is so female human hunter or male newman hunter) *Rangers* RAmar = Human Male Ranger RAmarl = Human Female Ranger RAcast= Android Male Ranger RAcaseal = Android Female Ranger (there are no newman rangers) *Forces* FOmar = Human Male Force FOmarl = Human Female Force FOnewm = Newman Male Force FOnewearl = Newman Female Force (there are no android forces as androids cannot use magic) Those are all the characters to choose from. Then you can customize their faces, hair style and colors, costume colors and height. this add to the fun and customization of the chars. Then there are these little floating robots behind you called mags. you feed them and they grow into powerful little mags. they add to your stats making you stronger. In this game you go around defeating things, getting stronger and finding better weapons and armor and riches. The graphics on this game are pretty good. Online play is pretty fun, and it only costs 9.95 to play per month(online). and unlike the xbox version, offline is free. so this is my review i hope u understand the game a little better now
PSO     On: 2003-07-04

Pso is a good game the only problem is the lack of story line that is why i gave it 4 stars instead of 5.
stuff     On: 2003-06-28

It is fun. It has good graffiks. multyplayer is fun. so is online playing.
Oh My Gawd     On: 2003-06-19

If you are an RPG fan and you have the Game-cube. Get this game now. This is one of the best online Role-Playing ever created. Plus a new Episode. First off the bat you can choose from up to 12 Race/Class combinations. Not to include the customation feature, which gives you, over a hundred different looks to choose from. The sheer amount weapons are mind-boggling. And when in game you raise what most others and I call (a pokemon-like) robot called a MAG. But the greatest feature about this game is its offline multi-player capability (so get your friends.)
buy     On: 2003-06-15

Where do you buy the online adapter? My son wants to play the online version...thats why.
[good] game     On: 2003-06-08

This game is one of the best RPG game ever! The only pRoblem is that i cannot find any rare synthieses items where the hell are they. I cant find Parasite cell type d or any of those.
Overall this is one of the greatst games ever.
PSO MY GOD     On: 2003-04-22

this is the best game EVER!!! if you are planning on buying gamecube this is the first game you want to buy.you make your own player and choose from three diferant charecter classes. at first you start off with basic weapons. as you grow higher lavels and you attack, mind, and accuracy increase you will update to stronger and cooler weapons. and on your quest you may come across some rare items too. i cant stop playing this game!!!
Good game but with serious flaws     On: 2003-04-20

Ok this game PSO for Gamecube is an excellent game immersing storyline brilliant hybrid gameplay with a mix between real-time fighting and RPG. Dont get me wrong, this is an extremely fun game but frankly the saving feature is GARBAGE!!! Your files will get corrupted and you will lose ALL of your progress. The saving features are way too complicated. Also, if you buy this game and beat it and hope to trade it in forget it. Once the serial number and access key are entered into your system no trading post will accept the game as a trade in. Once again, good game but with serious flaws.
A great addition to any Gamecube library     On: 2003-04-15

Words cant describe how amazingly fun and addicting this game is. Be prepared to stay up until 5 in the morning fighting your way past the monsters on Ragol with people from Japan, Europe, and the USA. Worried about communication? Well you shouldnt be because the game translates what you say and it appears on the screen of the other user in their versions language. Its so easy to chat with people because you have a large number of hot keys to assign messages to. All this game requires is the Modem or Broadband Adapter and youre set to go! You dont have to spend $50 on a service that isnt required, unlike PSO for the Xbox.

This RPG is for people of all ages who enjoy fun, simple, and addictive games. SEGA also releases great quests online that you can play with other people. You have the chance to win new rares and trade them with your friends. What are you waiting for? BUY IT!!

BUY NOW!     On: 2003-04-11

If you can find a copy of this game, buy it. You will never stop playing. Graphics may be slightly outdated, but online fun is impossible to beat. Gamecube runs it fine, despite others reviews. Major framerate drop in 4 player split screen. Very addicting buy now, thats an order.
Great game...     On: 2003-04-05

If you didnt have to pay 9 bucks a month for it. Go find the original unopened and a Dreamcast. Its free and basicaly the same expierience. The 9 dollar fee is totaly uncalled for and not worth it. Skip this game. Its great but not 9 bucks a month great.
Best Game I've Played     On: 2003-04-01

This game is pure amazing. Im currently at lv. 35 and ive beaten episode 1 and am halfway though ep 2, Anyone who is interested in online gmaing or rpgs should get this game.

Online mode is a huge perk, you can meet other peps online.
chat and all, but here is the dark side of online play:

8.95 Service fee thats a pain in the ARSE if you ant got a credit card!

Item duplicaters (know as dupers) arent ard to find, as they ruin some of hte fun of finding rare items, and they sometimes make rare as common as 1* sabers (ex: the Flowens Sword)

But there are also good natured people who will gladly give you UNDUPED items.

So basically, get this game if you parents arent protective about their cards, and you can deal with dupers, Its a good RPG with a good offine multiplayer mode.

ENJOY!

Greatest game since Super Smash Bros. Melee     On: 2003-03-23

I found this game to be very exciting, without even going online. If you want to buy this game, and have alot of friends that live nearby, or like to come over to play a little gamecube, get this game. You can create your own characters, (mine personally are all named after Grandia II characters :D) fight huge bosses, battle each other, partake in a HUGE plotline, without even going online and paying extra! I find this extremely nice, and I think Im going to go play it right now.
Phantasy Star Online ROCKS!     On: 2003-03-21

This is one awsome game! The 3rd best, after Zelda: Orcarina of Time and Zelda: Majoras mask! You can custoize you character to look like you (in some ways) and it feels like youre in the game! The MAG system is like having a robot pet and the replay value is limtless because you can take your personolized character online! Can it get any better?
Awsome Game     On: 2003-03-10

This game is great the graphics for this game are like off the charts compared to the dc. I know the prices for going online are absurb but i dont care, for all you out there you better watch out for a hunter named Drak or the robot hunter named Ke.

Great     On: 2003-03-07

When the Dreamcast first hit the shelves, many of us stared longingly for several moments at that phone jack on the back of the system. It took time, but that little port has finally seen action via the Web browser, "Chu Chu Rocket," "Quake 3," "Starlancer," and Visual Concepts 2001 sports titles. The capstone to Segas initial online multiplayer lineup, however, is a little SonicTeam gem called "Phantasy Star Online."

Although it incorporates many elements from the "Phantasy Star" series, "PSO" is a side story at best. The events in the game take place approximately 1,000 years after the end of "Phantasy Star 2." Seven years ago, the interstellar transport ship Pioneer 1 landed on the planet of Ragol to begin colonization. Pioneer 2 arrives to bring more colonists to the settlement, but as communication is established between Pioneer 2 and the planets surface, a huge explosion rocks Ragol. The Central Dome of the colony is ground zero. Taking the role of an adventurer from Pioneer 2, your job is to figure out what happened on Ragol that fateful day. This premise is simply an excuse for "PSO" to exist; you dont get much more narrative than that.

Luckily, the lack of story doesnt detract from the fun of the game. Much as in "Diablo," Gameplay consists of heading into mazelike environments, clearing areas of numerous monsters, snatching up any items they may drop, and selling said items for cash back in town. As you gain experience from kills, you become stronger, progress further, and find better weapons and armor. Eventually, you can defeat the boss of the area and move on to the next area.

"PSO" differs from "Diablo" in that the game is fully 3D, with the perspective being third-person over-the-shoulder. The basic gameplay is solid, outside of some occasional camera troubles, although the battle system is a bit simplistic. Fighting boils down to "point and shoot." Strategy comes into play only when attackers swarm over your character in the higher difficulty levels. Because of this, the game can become repetitive, particularly when a character is powerful enough to make it through an area, but not quite strong enough to take on the area boss. Leveling up is tedious, but can be made relatively painless if you have online teammates with whom you enjoy playing.

You create characters by choosing one of nine character types, and then customizing the appearance of your selection to suit your taste. A variety of heads, faces, colors, and outfits are available for each type, and a proportion editor lets you use a sliding scale to change the height and weight as you please. Characters can be used exclusively online, exclusively off-line, or in a combination of both.

Of course, the heart of the game is the online multiplay, and "PSO" excels in this area. When you log on, you find yourself in a lobby area, which serves as both a chat lounge and a gateway to the actual game. From the lobby you can link up with up to three other players and jump into a quest. "PSO" uses an innovative Symbol Chat system that lets you communicate with player-designed face icons. You can also construct chat sentences from preset phrase menus. Any phrase you chose from a preset menu will automatically be translated for the other players. Japanese players will see your message in Japanese; French players will see it in French. In practice, most communication is done through old-fashioned typing, but Segas bold attempt to break down language barriers is worthy of note.

Lag is almost non-existent. Where it does crop up, the game hides it exceedingly well. The most prominent display of lag is a delay in picking up an item or a teammate slashing at thin air but still hitting an enemy. This does not affect gameplay, and not once was lag anything more than an occasionally amusing quirk throughout the 60 or so hours I spent online with "PSO."

Indeed, the online play is so smooth that sometimes it doesnt feel like the game is being played online. The environments you hack, blast, and cast your way through are packed with gorgeous detail. The Forest where you begin the quest is one of the most visually stunning pieces of work on a console to date. Animation is excellent, and the Forests dragon boss gives the impression of a truly fearsome creature. Yet somehow SonicTeam managed to make all of this run buttery smooth for four players on 56-Kbps modems.

Sound is less stellar than are graphics. While the music is excellent, incorporating some of the old "Phantasy Star" themes into new compositions, sound effects tend to fall flat. Granted, there can only be so much variety in sword slashes and bullet hits, but more distinct sounds would have been nice. Additionally, a number of monster sounds are taken from existing Dreamcast sound libraries. Theyre fine sounds for monsters to make, but it did seem a bit odd to hear the Poison Lilies laugh at me with the voice of the first boss from "House of the Dead 2."

If you are looking for an online RPG in the same vein as "Ultima Online" or "EverQuest," or if you are a "Phantasy Star" fan expecting an in-depth continuation of the classic RPG saga, then you will be sorely disappointed. "PSO" is not massively multiplayer, and the story is scant, handed out in tiny parcels in the form of a breadcrumb trail of data storage devices. Sharp-eyed "Phantasy Star" veterans will spot a number of connections and references to the previous games, though.

None of the aforementioned shortcomings ruin the game by any means. "PSO" is an attempt to move console gaming further into the realm of online play, and it has succeeded in what it was designed to do. In the process, SonicTeam created an undeniably addictive game in the great tradition of multiplayer dungeon crawling. "Gauntlet" and "Diablo" fans will feel right at home, and anyone who has a craving for hacking up Locustas with a few friends will undoubtedly find a few dozen hours of enjoyment in "Phantasy Star Online." This title is a solid gaming experience, a tremendous technical feat that overcomes the limitations of a dial-up connection, and a welcome return to a Sega franchise that has been gathering dust for far too long.

Great game     On: 2003-02-22

this game is awesome its graphics and char creation are great and the veriety of wepons and armor ext are top class. i think however that the monsters tho well made seem to repeat themselves they may look different but esentally the same ( a bear like creature turns into a sharklike creature except ones harder to kill then the other)and the chat commands are slow to type unless u have a special attachment. other then that tho i would have to say this game is worth the money if u like role playing games.
Yahoo!!!     On: 2003-02-01

This game is the best!!! The only thing is that you really should go online with it. If you dont go online, you only get about 10% of the fun you can have online. Ya!

Best RPG Ever!     On: 2003-01-26

Im not a big fan of the whole RPG world, but since I started playing PSO I have gotten into it. It is fun because you dont pick your moves you atually do everything yourself. The Battling is actually fun, and never gets boring. There is such a large amount of weapons that your always looking for that weapon that suits you perfectly. Personally I like Rifles. I have not been playing it that long, and I already notice that it is ten times better than any Final Fantasy RPG out.

There is so much more to it. Then the best part is you can play it in multi player mode. That is when the real fun kicks in.I havnt even played it online yet. Online gaming with this is probably a blast.

If you are a big fan of RPGs. You must pick this game up as soon as possible.

WOWZERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!     On: 2003-01-14

This Game is Fun!     On: 2003-01-13

First of all I would like to point out that I am not an RPG fanatic, but I started playing this game when it was out on the Sega Dreamcast, and I couldnt put the controler down. Now that PSO is out on Nintendos Gamecube I couldnt resist. Get this game, get the modem or broadband adapter, and get ready for the most addicting and fun game for any console online game.
THIS GAME ROCKS... BEST GAME FOR GC!!     On: 2003-01-04

I had never played this game when it first came out for Sega. I had heard about it after it came out for GameCube and, after reading some reviews, decided to get it. IT IS AWSOME. You get to make your own character(s) and then go on missions. The best game and rpg I have ever played. The multiplayer mode is awsome also. your friends can play with characters you created and saved onto your memory card or make new ones for them. Ive never played the game online but I here it rocks. IF YOU HAVE A GAMECUBE, THEN GET THIS GAME. If not, GET A GAMECUBE AND GET THIS GAME. THE GRAPHIX AND GAMEPLAY ARE AWSOME!!!!
A hand for Sega...     On: 2003-01-03

Even though i dont have GC, I have the original for Dreamcast, and i am proud that the legacy is continued in an incarnation for the Gamecube. I just want anyone looking at this review to know that even though i only have the original one for Dreamcast, this is more of a work of art than a video game. Very addicting, and keeps you hooked with online mode, lobby games, rare items, and more. Props to Sega for releasing this. I hope you buy this game RIGHT NOW, and play it. Enjoy!
AWSOME AND CONTINUOUS EXITMENT FOR ALL GAMERS!     On: 2002-12-27

I tell ya this game NEVER EVER gets boaring and the graphics are outstanding! I very much encourage you to buy this game!
Yet another reason to buy a GameCube     On: 2002-12-24

Hunting down Game Cubes only online title may be a chore that some people may not be interested in, while hunting down the broadband adapter is even worse... thankfully I found both, and had a credit card handy that day, and boy am I glad I did.
I was a fan of he Dreamcast original, and so when Episode 1&2 was announced for GameCube I was very happy. Regardless of what anybody has said about graphical enhancements in the past I cannot stress enough that there has been drastic enhancements to the graphics, to the camera, and best of all to the controller sensitivity, defending you character is so much easier because the game is a lot more responsive than its previous incarnations.
There are more character types to choose from, new strengths, new weaknesses, a few new monsters, etc, and it is plenty fun on its own without going online.
Sega also included the option for four-player action offline, which is also a blast.
There is one complaint I have for this game, and only one, the lack of a keyboard, or headset for communication. Despite the addition of hotkeys, conversation online is a big pain because typing through the control pad is too slow, and by the time I finish my sentence my comrades have already left the lobby. Nintendo needs to release a keyboard for the GameCube, even if its only for PSO.
Be aware that this game is not out of print, its just that demand is extremely high, and during the next few months it may be difficult to find, but not impossible. Some websites are reporting that the product is discontinued, but this is not the case. The game is a lot of fun, and if you dont mind doing a little hunting for it its well worth the price of admission. Hopefully this means Nintendo will get its act together with online games and start getting serious about an online plan.
PSO to save the day!     On: 2002-12-20

Lately Nintendos been in some what of a downfall. Everyone was waiting for that one game that would turn it around, the one game that would have it all. My freinds, PSO is that game. It brings a mixture of action, drama, mystery, and puzzle into one outstanding video game.
Bringing back the original cast of PSO from Dreamcast and introducing a whole new Force group brings the total number of playable characters to 12. But the ability to mix and match and customize your character to your liking boosts the possibilities
beyond belief.
In mission one you find yourself on a planet infested with mutated native animals. Its up to you to find out who is causing this a stop them.
The range of weapons is nearly endless. From Rifle and Sword to Photon Launcher and Wand. Plus a few extra weapons just for us faithful Nintendo fans.
This game is also playable online. Meaning you can team up with a buddy on the other side of the country and fight evil beside him or with three others. You can trade items, trade cards, make new freinds, and even destroy those who arent your freinds in battle mode!
With all of this in mind, dont even hesitate to purchase this game. The possibilities are infinite and the funfactor is a definite ten out of ten. Enjoy!
Most fun I ever had playing an RPG     On: 2002-12-18

this is the best game ive ever played, it has so much content and gameplay to keep you playing for hours and hours. and the thing that makes it even more cool is that you can go online with your friends and play with each other. I bought the original pso for the dreamcast when it first came out and i couldnt put the game down. A good piece of advice is to feed your mag the bigger healing things like tri fluid and di fluid it will help raise their stats fast!

A Needle in a Hay Stack!     On: 2002-12-10

SEAGA!!!!WHY????? If your looking at this item here at amazon around 12/9 your wodering why this item is not only out of stock but may be discontinued. The answer lies in SEGAs incredibly stupid marketing plans by not making nearly enough games to meet demand. This game had been totally soled out across the entire country! There isnt a single one left. Its just like the idiotic mistake of sony to not even come close to making enough PS2s on release. Its gonna be at least a month until this game becomes easy to find! ... YOU SEGA! Yea it sounds corny but its true!
Same thing over and over and over and over again     On: 2002-12-10

Since my parents wont let me get an account this review is based on the offline play.
First of all this game is VERY, VERY monotonous. Monsters are repeated very, very much. The designers got so obsessed with a monster they made like about 7 types of that monster, and the only thing that varied the types were the color and size. Also there arent many different monsters in the game.
Also, most of episode 1 takes place underground; underground mines, caves and ruins. And at each place the same freaking rooms are repeated over and over again.
The game play at first is OK, as well as the weapons, character types (well balanced) and character creation. But this game will bore you in a week or two, that is if you dont play it so often.
It has the same graphics as the dreamcast version.
The best game in the world     On: 2002-12-07

this is the best game ever, I would rate it 5 stars out of 5 stars. I dont think this should be rated T for Teen though. I think every kid should put this game on their wishlist or.... BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Not just another RPG     On: 2002-12-06

This game was sold out everywhere, and for good reason. This game is loaded with content. Aspected weapons of all types from fire/ice/lightning attacks, to drain life or experience attacks. Armor of all types, many with SLOTS with which you can attatch a myriad of accessories.

The weapons look gorgeous, and some of the rarer weapons will blow your mind, like the double bladed photon sabre (much like Darth Mauls lightsabre) and your character will wield it with similar proficiency. Many weapons (and armor!) have new appearances in the gamecube version. Many items that previously looked just like another weapon of its class with a different colored photon stream, now have an altogether unique look. The Dragon Slayer from PSO on Dreamcast now looks the the sword Sparda from Devil May Cry!

Also, many people obsessed only over weapons because they were the only thing that changed appearance. Any armor would not show up on your body. Now there are many powerful (and beautiful) defensive items you can wear and see displayed on your character.

There is a dressing room feature in which you can spend 10, 000 meseta to change your characters appearance when you get tired of the one you have. Hey, beats making a whole new character just because you are tired of your look.

There is also an entirely NEW adventure, with NEW bosses in Episode 2. The final boss is FRIGHTENING, as in the first battle he is on the cieling!

I hope this has been helpful, and that others will fill in the blanks.

AWESOME     On: 2002-12-02

THIS IS THE BEST GAME IVE EVER BOUGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE BEST PARTS ARE THE WEAPONS, THE GRAPHICS, THE MULTIPLAYER FEATURES, BOTH ONLINE AND OFFLINE, AND THE CHARACTER CREATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Diablo 2, in 3-d     On: 2002-11-30

If you liked Diablo 2 but wished the graphics were more up to date, or that it was set in a more futuristic setting, then this is your game. Although Im not online yet, Ive played with 3 players split-screen and it was a blast. Hours seem to go by very quickly when playing multi-player, and the addition of " mags " ( Basically little pets you feed that increase your strength, defense, etc. ) are a great addition. Overall a very good game.
BUY THIS GAME!     On: 2002-11-28

Guys, this is for people who dont own the game. You have to buy this game! I got it being a little iffy about it but it is the best game I have ever played! It may not be a true rpg, IT"S EVEN BETTER!

It may not be the most graphically amazing game in Episode 1, but when you get to Episode 2 it really shows good graphics. The single player by itself is very fun. I havent played it online yet but it still rocks. Even if single player doesnt suit your needs, They HAVE YOU COVERED! They added 4 player multiplayer too! I was amazed how fun it was! Time flies when your having fun! Its very true on this game! My friends came over to try the game, and when it seemed like they had only been maybe 30 minutes, it had been 2 hours! I can just go on and on how good this game is. It is great for parties! The multiplayer modes include: Battle (Fight against eachother), Challenge (Fight through the level with bad weapons, and Normal ( Co-op pretty much. Its just so fun running up to a guy and slicing him with a saber. And you never get tired of the weapons! There is a huge selection! I like it more than an RPG because you can 1. Make a really cool chacter, 2. You dont have to go into those annoying battle scenes. Well, I might go over the limit so, 3 words: BUY THIS GAME!

Surprisingly addictive.     On: 2002-11-14

Phantasy Star Online is one of the most addictive games I have ever played. Not only is PSO well planned and thought out, but it offers more modes of play than the original Dreamcast release.

I was very pleased to find that there are now four modes of play with PSO. There is Single player, Multiplayer Co-op, Multiplayer Challenge, and Multiplayer Online.

In single player, you can take jobs and progress through an actual story. The story is set after an apocalyptic event. You are a hunter, who travels to the planets surface on missions. As your missions progress, you learn more about what happened to the planet. As time progresses, you become stronger, and can learn more skills. Single player mode offers the most interaction with Non-Player Characters (NPCs).

There are only slight differences between the multiplayer modes. Multiplayer Online and Multiplayer Co-op are the exact same. You go out and fight on the planets surface, for no other reason, than to gain levels. This may not seem like much, but you have to play multiplayer to gain access to some items. Different character classes gain different items during standard play. For instance, a FOMARL (Male/Human/Force) will gain access to an Ice Saber +3, but must trade the saber with a HUMAR for a Draw Cane +1. You may also exchange money in Multiplayer modes(Except Challenge).

Challenge mode varies from the other Multiplayer modes. Challenge allows you to fight other players (online or offline) for the heck of it. You can even wager items or money in the events.

Game play takes some getting used to, but it is not difficult to learn. Movement is performed with the left analog stick. This is not the problem. The problem comes in planning ahead. In battle, you only have 6 actions that can be accessed quickly. You set these up in the customization menu. You can set attacks, items, or techniques in these slots. Often times, youll find yourself fighting a slew of enemies, each weak to a different element, so you will equip yourself with all 3 elemental attacks. Yet, when you have more useful techniques, like raising your attack power, you quickly find yourself in need of a quick fix. PSO has no pause feature, so as soon as you hit start, you need to make sure you are moving around, while using the right analog stick to navigate through menus. This can be cumbersome for those who are not accustomed to the Mouse and Keyboard play method or have trouble multitasking. The trouble with being in the menu screen, is that you can not realign your sight. You must rely on your ability to maneuver blindly. Once you are out of the menu screen, you can use the L trigger to realign your field of vision.

I can not say I was completely impressed with the PSOs environments. They seem a little lacking. Forests are just open fields surrounded by trees. This fails to provide an accurate feeling of actually being hunted or hunting the beasts that roam the land. The creature roster is rather impressive and imaginative. Designs range from small chicken like animals to huge ogres and worse. Sonic Team really had their work cut out for them.

Character growth is presented rather well in PSO. Instead of just leveling every time you kill something, like in Final Fantasy and most other RPGs, it takes hours before you even start to grow. The downside of this is that it takes forever to learn new techniques (which is necessary if you play as a Force user). The upside is that the game remains fun and does not become too easy too quickly. Not only does your character grow, but you also have a creature that travels with you called a MAG. MAGs can be equipped. Once equipped, a MAG will increase your stats. You need to feed them items every so often. Feeding your MAG regularly will cause it to gain levels. The more levels it gains, the stronger of an ally it will be. Feeding MAGs can be anything from recovery items to revival items. MAGs also allow your character to perform overdrive attacks. The manner in which you raise your MAG, determines what overdrives your MAG will have.

PSO has an excellent character creation system. First you choose what type you want your character to be (Hunter, Ranger or Force). Then you choose the gender and species. Once this is done, you can begin to design your character. Your character is customizable in the following areas: face, hair, skin tone, outfit, and proportion. Proportioning means that you select how tall/short and skinny/fat your character will be. Androids are the only let down. With Androids, you can only choose from a few preset body and head combinations. Androids also can not use techniques, which comes as a disadvantage. But they do get interesting weapons, such as chainsaws and reapers.

PSO wasnt entirely a great game. I was disappointed that you could not go on quests in multiplayer modes. It was also a draw back that characters are hard to level. For beginners to the RPG world, this can be very frustrating.

Overall, I found PSO to be a great game. It did not require an entire Memory Card like most Game Cube games. Despite the minor problems with this title, I would give it a 9.9. I highly recommend this to other Game Cube owners. Online or Offline, this is a must own.

Perfection comes to mind when I think of this game! Sonic Team couldnt have done better The game itself is 2 parts the old First part that was on DC and now including that and the Second part of the game Episode 2 looks amazing! With gigantic worlds that put the old PSO worlds to shame! You can play online or offline doing many quests and adventuring and how can you beat the sweat characters and weapons!? YOU CANT! PSOE1+2 is the best GC game by far and may always be the best GET THIS GAME!

PHANTASY STAR OFF-LINE BUGS     On: 2002-11-02

I had this game in hand at 10:00 A.M. on October 30th, and immediately gathered two friends to play "off-line" with. There arent too many off-line reviews as of now, so let this be one of the first.
We played through all of Ep. 1 and part of Ep. 2 within two days. First, there are graphical errors during every level, particularly the forest area. For example, the scenery will completely disappear if you arent close enough (as will your companions) and so you have no idea where your pals are unless you look at a map. Thats a small problem. My biggest complaint is the fact that there is NO way to save your game to the best of my knowledge. So, when someone wants to quit or has to leave the game for whateveer reason, everyone has to quit and lose the game. Were tired of having to play through every level eighty-thousand times just to get to a new place. Well, this may sound like a bad review, but dont get me wrong. Ive been waiting for this game for ages, being a PSO Dreamcast vetran, and I still say that it was well worth the wait. Its the best multiplayer game, off-line or on-line and always will be in my opnion. So, if youre trying to decide whether to purchase it or not, I say go ahead and buy it, because whether you intend to go on-line or off-line, youll be addicted for ages to come.
Never Ending Video Game Fun     On: 2002-11-02

Phantasy star online is by far one of the best games I have ever seen for the Gamecube. The game itself if very addictive and very fun. Although playing online may be costly[49.99 for game, 39.99 for internet adaptor, ? for keyboard(Maybe a future feature for games)] it is well worth the money. Also to keep the game so that it never gets boring(I dont think it will anyways) they may release different weapons and other things for the players online(somethings such as special weapons can only be gotten on the internet). This is one of the games that will never get boring to any player if you ask me.THIS GAME IS A MUST HAVE.
This game is awesome     On: 2002-10-30

I have never played a more innovative online game, offline is also really good too, especially now that there is multiplayer, it makes the game a whole lot better. I give graphics a 10, i have never seen better graphics for a online game, EVER. Most online games have big lags or the graphics really are blocky. This game uses smooth graphics and few blocks, and with custimizeable characters with a lot of detalil it makes me even more impressed. I played the first one for over 130 hours, all offline, and now that there is a multiplayer offline, it makes it a whole lot better for people who dont like to pay to play. So it just makes it even better. So I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes good RPGs.
New Features     On: 2002-10-30

PSO for the GameCube has vast improvements compared to the Dreamcast version. All the rare weapons in this game have been given a new look, since the Dreamcast versions rare weapons looked exacly the same as the normal weapons. Unlike the Dreamcast PSO v2, The Gamecube version actualy has a sequel to the first PSO, and lets you explore more of the planet Ragol and finish your mission of finding Red Ring Rico. New chat capabilities, you can hold more guild cards, and the online lobbies are diverse. Expect a great experience with PSO

Character interaction in the lobbies is worth the price alone. Trust me youll see! now im off to Ragol, later!

PSO Highlights     On: 2002-10-21

Most people tell you about how great this game is and never tell you what it really is about. You are a hunter who fights and destroys monsters bosses and such. You pick from 3 classes in which 4 different character are inlike this:

Hunter
1. Hunewearl
2. Humar
3. Hucast
4. Hucaseal

Ranger
1. Racaseal
2. Ramarl
3. Racast
4. Ramar

Force
1. Fonewm
2. Fomarl
3. Fonewearl
4. Fomar

The different classes you chose from vary as the hunters are close combat users, the rangers are gun weilders, and the Forces are the magic users. When you select the class and character you want you go into even more depth of what your character does and looks like. You get to select your name, Hair color, Hair Style, Outfit, Height, and Weight. This makes each character different and even more cooler. This game can be played online and offline by yourself or with 3 other buddies. Go and buy it and use all your free time into having fun and you may even see me online.

Great, Great game! Buy now. C'mon buy it. Click the button!     On: 2002-10-21

Why should you buy this game you ask? Because it represents a new era of online gaming! Oh yeah, its fun too:). When I first recieved phantasy star for the old sega systems, I was hooked. The
mix of sci-fi-like storyline and a huge realm of characters and weapons, i couldnt resist buyng the next one, and the next, oh yeah, teh next three, too! Dont pass up a great opprotunity to own a great game in a series that has proven succesfull.

Now you are probably expecting a review, well, I dont have one. I agree with all those aut there already, except if they are bad, then I dont agree with them. If theya are good, though, then I agree completly. So, go read one of those "good" ones and maybe buy a walkthrough. Buy now!

PS:anyone willing to send me a modem (56k please) mail it to 1519

the best game out of them all     On: 2002-10-18

The name of my review sais it all but obveously theres more to this game. I cant see how the average for all the reviews was only a four and a half stars! My friend has Phantasy Star Online, the first one obviously, for the sega dreamcast. Every time i went to his house me and him played it, I was hooked. So i bought a dreamcast just to play this game, like many other people it beat down my social life, not that I have much of one. I just played, played, and oh yah played some more. there are tons of weapons to choose from, and beter yet you get to create your charactor from scrach down to the slitesed detailes as the collers of their eyes to their facepant. There is one thing i could say i hated about this game is that when you play over the enternet some people love to use the gameshark which means that someone, unexpectedly come up to you and; kill you, take all your stuff, and run for it. I recently got a gamecube and whene I found out that a remake of PSO and a PSO episode two coming out for gamecube i jumt with exitment, i just coudnt hold my self. I knew i had to get it, and while im writing it right now I relize that it is one day befor it comes out, thats right its 10/17/02, and im again jumping with exitment. A piece of advece if your reading this review right now get this game. Peace out.
My favorite game of all time     On: 2002-10-16

If you need help in deciding on what game you want to puchase... Fear nomore! Phatasy Star Online (PSO)is by far the greatest game I have ever played, but if you are buying the game and not planing on playing it online then your not going to experience one of the biggest factors that make this game so great. If you played PSO on the DC then you know what im talking about, but if you havent then you need to go out and buy your self a modem so you could play online and truly see the meaning of what I speak. I strongly recommened this game. Hope to see you on Ragol. Peace out.
The return of the King!     On: 2002-10-07

...For first-timers, the game consists of 2 episodes. The first is the same basic game that Dreamcast users will have played, but with a few interesting alterations and additions. Episode 2 contains all new levels, creatures and adventures to embark upon.

You choose a character (Hunter, Ranger or Force), each of whom has his or her strenghts & weaknesses. You then fight your way through a forest, caves, mines and so on, collecting weapons & armour and building up your character. Now and then you may find a particularly interesting and rare item. Sometimes you set out on specific missions, sometimes you just push yourself through the different levels. The choice is yours.

The online game is a whole new experience. ...

How could you?     On: 2002-10-06

AS I read more and more of these reviews i see people giving it a low-rating becuase of the dreamcast version, there are 2 totally different games with different atributes. Its like saying a penny is the same as a 100 dollar bill. its not! I have indeed played the japanese version of this game it is very cool. Much different and better than the first. You explore more worlds, have more classes to pick from, new weapons, and the graphics are so much better, especially in the beach stages the water and the sky look real, this game is definately one of the best i have ever played, keep in mind if you are going to rate a game, make sure you have played it first, im sure if every oen who has rated it had played it the game would have a perfect 5 out of 5 star rating, yes it is that good!
This is a great game...     On: 2002-10-04

Ive played Phantasy Star Online since the initial Dreamcast release and have found it to be a very entertaining game. I never really got into the one player mode because it was horribly boring and repetitive(Warning: Dont get this game to play single player), but online play is much the opposite. Most of you reading this review are already familiar with all the basics of how the game works and its old features. So I am just going to mention the Gamecube specific features. You can now save up to four characters on one memory card(instead of Dreamcasts one per card) and you can use them on your friends gamecube(excellent). Among other new features are the new levels. Sonic Team added six new levels and all of them look amazing, the levels are as follows: Sea Base, Ruins, Spaceship, Beach, Swamp, and the mysterious not yet seen "Control Room". There is also new weapons, items and characters. You can now assume the role of a FOmar, HUcaseal or RAmarl. I highly suggest that if you have a Gamecube you get this game.
Phantasy Star Online: Addicting, fun, and ONLINE     On: 2002-09-27

First of all I would like to say that PSO for Dreamcast was one of, if not THE best, games of all time. It was addicting (I myself had played for over 70 hours all together), fun, and best of all online.
Now its on Gamecube; a 2-disc set. Episode 1 features are the same as the DC versions, but Episode 2 is a whole new story with more levels, characters, weapons, and a whole lot more. Sega and Nintendo even give you one month free hunters license (what you need to get online). How cool is that? If you get this game you will not regret it.
This game is pretty cool     On: 2002-09-26

Well, its ok except for the cheats for online, i mean that takes the fun out of it. It should be like starcraft or something, like you can only do cheats offline. Oh well, this game is still pretty cool, I CANT WAIT TILL IT COMES OUT! The demo was sweet, you can create a cool character. I almost made me.. hehe, just kidding. All in all this one deserves 1 and a half thumbs up.
Pso, Probally the best Gamecube Game...     On: 2002-09-24

This game was one of the best for dreamcats and will be one of he best for gamecube. This game has all the features of a true RPG. Huge detailed worlds, hundreds of monster, an whole additional adventure only for the gamecube. What ca i say, Buy the game now!
New features     On: 2002-08-28

The first phantasy star online was good to the first few months, exploring worlds, killing monsters, leveling up and finding new and rare items. It began to die when cheat codes were created for the game. The game cube version has higher security and if codes do get invented and used on the servers sega has vowed to patch them. This game pretty much follows the origional except there are new, harder monsters, new items, over 30 new character color and body mods, and many new ares to unlock as well as differnt play modes. This isnt based on rumor, sonic team has released this information as well. I have also got the privalge to play the game when i visitted japan 2 weeks ago.
A gaming revolution     On: 2002-08-10

The DC version of PSO was one of the best online games of my entire gaming career. It makes me sad to think how great the game could have been if cheating was never present. Yet, even with the cheating I play this game like I did from day one. Im eagerly awaiting the GC version because Im thrilled with all the new features. I know you know all the obvious changes but heres some you may not know: The lobbies have been all designed different, if you go to PSO world you can see a pic. of a lobby with water fountains in them. Also the information board (Was also in DC version) now lets you actually POST messages to other players...For instance..if you wanted someone to join your clan you could advertise it over the information boards, cool huh? I hope that Sega really trys to make cheating as slim as possible for the GC, if they do then i guarantee all of you reading this that PSO WILL BE A GAMING REVOLUTION.
I wish I could rate this game a 6 out of 5     On: 2002-08-06

This games graphics are astonishing it is alot better than the dreamcast version and this one has two disc WOW thats going to be a best seller for sure!!!!!!!!!
Come on People it is the same thing over and over again!     On: 2002-07-27

Alright this game is one thing you going through a world that is not that huge and shoot run shoot run, the enemys that come up in the same place over and over again this game is NOT a RPG at all and there is no posible way you can say that it is, it is a adventure game, there is mention of a story at the start but through the levels (the orignal dreamcast one has only 4) You hear nothing at all about the story except from thies little kiosk things and even that is like "our ship crasted we were stranded" all and all if you can do the same thing over and over agin and have fun then you might like the game, the only reson I gave this two stars is because it is fun for about 3 weeks, then you wake up, but just dont fall into the hype people who want a RPG for GC this is not one in the lest bit, you are looking at a pure hak and slash. Granted I have only played the Dreamcast version, but from my understanding they are not changing much, or adding a story.
One of the coolest games ever     On: 2002-07-26

This game is awsome! I have played it since it came out for DreamCast and I was hooked, I couldnt wait to fight the dragon
it was so cool! I had played hours on in so now I just dont even touch my dreamcast I have other things to do :P
PSO     On: 2002-07-24

Listen Im not gonna exclaim or anything... All Im gonna say is that if you liked any other MMORPG such as Everquest, Diablo 2, or Asherons Call...this is a must have. Half of the time you can sit in lobbies talking to buddies, and the other half doing downloadable quests or even battle mode to test your strength against your friends...or better, your online enemies. The only drawback to this game on the Dreamcast was the massive hacking of items and PKing before they even had a PK in v2. But overall this game is pretty good. Id have to give it a 9-10 stars because of the cheating. Thats about it.
Dang this is TIGHT!     On: 2002-07-22

I played the first pso title at my friends house and got unregretebly obbsessed with it.So when I went to E3 I saw it and had to play it. The game is great! From the MAG raising, new characters, and levels I can only sum it all up in one word, VICIOUS!!!!!!
IF YOU DONT LIKE THIS GAME...     On: 2002-07-12

THIS GAME IS DA BEST!!! I PLAYED 24/7 ON THE DC AM I AM SOOOO HOOKED!!! ... I LOVED IT!!! IF YOU R A HARD CORE RPG PLAYER(LIKE ME)I RECOMEND THIS GAME AND EVEN IF UR A ACTION ADVENTURE FAN GET IT AS WELL. BEST GAME EVER!!! 100 OUT OF 10 STARS
Why? WHY? It is soo good!     On: 2002-06-29

I first played PSO way back when in the golden days of the Dreamcast. I was hooked after 2 minutes of play! Here I am, some 500 hours and Version 2 later (hey, I DO have a social life, but PSO almost claimed it) and I find myself ignoring it just because I know if I pick up the controller, even for a minute, I can say farewell to the rest of my day! With a wide range of equipment and various special abilities as well as extremely rare items and treats for the virtual pet like Mag, treasure hunting in RPGs has never been so exciting! This game is long, challenging, easy to play, and addictive. All of these are what RPG makers strive to acheive, and Sonic Team has finally done it! The game is nearly flawless, and with gorgeous graphics that were so good it took a year for me to find something comparable, how can anyone possibly go wrong with any Phantasy Star Online version for any system! Oh, did I mention players can join up with other players online to fight harder battles and test their skills using a wide variety of specialized multiplayer challenges like Deathmatch and Soccer? This is a MUST HAVE for RPG fans and anyone with a Dreamcast, Gamecube or XBox! I bought a new system just so I could have the next version! Buy it. Period.
Why not     On: 2002-06-26

this game is great it is very fun doing almost all of the missions except for the ones with the people that always die than i get mad and break my controller. the only other bad thing about this game is that online people try and give you illegal items which are sometimes good and other times they kill you. to top it off with that people try to pk you which means they cast the opposite of resta(a healing spell) and it kills you in one hit than they collect your items and money and sigh off. overall this will be a great game if they are able to block people who pk u.
It's real simple...     On: 2002-06-20

Basically, its real simple: I almost failed my 3rd year of law school because of the Dreamcast version of this game.

This game is the most amazing game I have ever played. In fact, I had never played an RPG before PSO - PSO is sooo good, that I know play other RPGs on my dreamcast just because I was attracted to this genre by PSO.

PSO is a great family game, too. My fiance and I used to play it all the time, and she eventually made her own character. Its a good game to attract both younger and older players to gaming and particularly the RPG genre.

One of the Greats     On: 2002-04-18

Ive been playing games since Megaman 1 and Phantasy star is one of the best. Id be better without pkers or hackers but its still great. I love the wide variety of equipment and the mags are just cool. What first caught my eye was that you could make your OWN character. Only rpg that can compete is Legend of Legaia. (My opinion)
It's Back!!!     On: 2002-03-29

Its back again. Phantasy Star Online is one of the best RPGs I have played in my life. I played it all the time. I just hope Nintendo finds a way to prevent hackers. I have heard that Nintendo is stalling. They are thinking of making it just offline. I will be soooooo ticked if they do, though. I have been waiting for this game for months. Besides hackers, its a great game all around.
ITS PHANTASY STAR!!!!! ITS ONLINE!!!!!! WHATS NOT TO LOVE?     On: 2002-03-28

COME ON PEOPLE!!!! Phantasy Star was segas biggest and greatest role-playing game! You cant go wrong when Phantasy Star is paired with the SICKENING speed of the Gamecubes processors. Online gaming might be new to some, but it IS the wave of the future. GET THIS GAME
Most Addicting Rpg Ever     On: 2002-03-28

This is the best RPG ive ever played. It has so much variety. From doing the quest alone to doing it with 3 friends youll spend countless hours enjoying this game. It has an interesting storyline, great gameplay, awsome graphics and a great soundtrack. From leveling up to searching for rare weapons, armor, and spells there really wasnt a dull moment in this game. There is one problem though. There are people online who use gameshark (a cheat device) who may do something to you which may ruin the experience. Such as kill you and take your best items! Hopefully this can be fixed in the GCN release. Still, even if its not, this game is still worth buying regardless of the people who cheat.
Best Game Yet!     On: 2002-03-22

I can just say that I love this game! u being able to go online is the coolest part. if you think that u are the best of the best, you have not been online with it. I am the best at this game out of the whole town but when I got online with it, i was wormchow: never stood a chance. it will never get boring, in my opinion there should be a world championship for this game. it is the best game yet!!!!!
THE BEST DARN THING THAT HAPPENED SINCE -THINKING HERE???-     On: 2002-03-20

Ok, lets start from the top. PSO is just mind-blowing. I never thought that a video game could hipnotize me like PSO does when I am surrounded by 5+ Delsabers, or when Im all out of monomates and dimates and trimates and monofluids and difluids and trifluids and my HP is down to 1 and I dont have enough MP use a techniqe to revive my health and Im facing De Ro Le without any weapon besides my hands and feet, or the time when...well you get the point. PSO is just the most awesome game that Ive ever played before. Sega, I just want to thank you for the many hours, or days, or weeks, or months, or years that Ive had to enjoy PSO. And I sure hope you can make an even better one with the game cube. But I have one complaint to make. When you.re standing in a hallway or something and there are enemies in the room in front of you, you cant hit them, but yet if lets say a delsaber is in a room and Im in the hallway if Im close enough it can slice the crud out of me. Maybe you can fix that, but if you dont PSO will still be the best darn RPG in the world.
Here is a VERY short list of why I like PSO:
-Awesome Graphics
-Literally Years Of Amazing Game Play (never get tired of it)
-Large Variety Of Weapons, Armor, Mags, Power Ups...
-Very Interesting Story and Background Music (When you first enter the Dark Volz stage)
PSO GC     On: 2002-02-17

It looks good, i have seen a video or 2. The dreamcast version was cool no.... extreamly cool. And incase any one wondered PSO GC wont have any cheats because the disks for the GC are copyrighted to nintendo so no one can make disks for it :)
You will love this game     On: 2002-01-03

Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast is an addictive, fast paced RPG/Action game. The GameCube and XBOX versions will carry over all of the original features and add some extras to boot.

Online connectivity is the next evolution in gaming, and Phantasy Star Online will single handedly jump-start the new era.

When you play this game, try to remember one thing: Dont allow addiction ruin your life.

Finally a good RPG!     On: 2001-12-31

Nintendo needed some more RPGs ever since Squaresoft went to Playstation. I like RPGs and I now have to rely on Game Boy Advance and Zelda games. If you love RPGs too and/or have a Dreamcast. I reccommend this game. It is non-stop action and is the first online game for Nintendo. The only thing different compared to the Dreamcast version might be the graphics and controls. They will be a little better on the Gamecube. Dont listen to some people who say the Xbox version is better. The controls are harder to master and the controller itself is big and clunky. (It itself is almost the size of a Gamecube). And the graphics would be so close you wouldnt be able to tell the difference.
PHANTASY STAR ONLINE VERSION 2     On: 2001-12-26

this game kicks ass! i liked the first 1 because i was a level 79 and i stoped playing it but since i hav a gamecube i can play it online and i will be 1 of the first people to go online with it. once i start playing this game i will not stop playing it because im so addicted 2 it that i stay on for 8 to 12 hours strait, im in love with this game!
"A Gamer" is a fool     On: 2001-12-21

The x-box version only has one possible edge over the GC version, and that will be the space of the disk. Other then that, the games will be at a dead heat. Graphicly, the systems can match. Dont let the numbers fool you, the Gamecubes gekko is a different type of CPU, which benchmarks equal or even higher then the X-boxes. As for the broadband, thats an achiles heel. The Gamecube can use it as well as the traditional 56k modem, but if you dont have a broadband connection, your x-box modem is useless.

Dont even get me started on the controllers, just... dont. The x-box controller will never be superior to any other controller in anything besides possibly wieght, size, and shamelessly large logo

Game will take your life away.     On: 2001-12-21

Get this game. This is a sequel the first online RPG on a console, and will the first online game for the GAMECUBE.

This game is addictive, and is hard to put down. The gameplay is fastpased, and pure action.

You will love this game.

The BEST Online RPG     On: 2001-12-18

SEGA did an awsome job with PSO. I have had countless sleepless nights and involuntary fastings cause of this game. One of the first online RPGs to hit the market... Gameplay is unique and one of the best. Over 100s of weps to use from and over 10 characters you can customize from head to toe. From the smallest details, like: face paint, proportion, color of eyes, costume, hair, and over 10 different hairstyles for most of the characters. The only real problem with this game is that online many people have GameShark (GS) and Xploder... People that have the GS and Xploder mess up the fun of this game... Which is serching for Rares through out the game. GS and Xploder allows them to make weapons, armor, mags, etc... Hope that for the GameCube version they choose to band the use of GS, Xploder, or anything else that alters the gameplay of PSO online.
Its comming to Xbox too.     On: 2001-12-16

Just wait till Phantasy Star comes to the Xbox. The release dates will be very close (if not the same), but the Xbox version will be much much better. Not just the better graphics and sleaker controls, but the fact that voice chat and faster online gameplay, thanks to Xboxs broadband, will add a better experience to the whole world of Phantasy Star.
One of the first RPG games to go online!     On: 2001-12-07

Gamecube is hosting about every hit on Dreamcast. This one, unlike the others, is the most original and amazingly innoventive game to hit the market. PSO had you play with other people around the world from Asia, Europe, South America, Antaritica, North America, Austrilla, and Africa. The game proves that you could go around the world in less than 5 minutes. The original gameplay and astounding graphics made the game a classic on Dreamcast. Hopefully, on Gamecube will be able to improve the Dreamcast game by taking out the tiny little promblems that were bad so Sega of America, Inc. has to make the grubby problems into perfect details. Will Gamecube live up to its title or fail miserably? Its up to them...
Good Game     On: 2001-10-18

The Dreamcast version was good but now this one has 3 new characters and a new area called Jungle. This will be great because it has 4 players offline.
